Advantages and disadvantages of digital signature

Updated: May 21, 2022

A digital signature can be defined as a mathematical system which helps in identifying and authenticating the sender of a digital document. This process verifies and authenticates the sender as well as receivers. Computerized signature is exceptionally proficient in legitimately restricting reports since they are hard to mimic and they are time-stepped too as they use public-key cryptography. These signatures are protected by the digital certificate which makes it highly difficult for anyone to copy or modify these signatures, Let’s see the advantages and disadvantages of digital signature are.

Advantages 1. Time-saving = Digital signatures can be processed by anywhere without the physical appearance of the person, lets see this with an example ( A manager who is traveling because of work and needs to deliver a signature on a vital document can still access any of the device such as a tablet, laptop, or phone to sign the document with the cryptography proofed security, which saves a lot of time for the organization.

2. Security = signatures are very sensitive and the security needs to be top-notch to secure it, a digital signature makes sure the authentication and legitimacy of a signature and sender with features such as time stamping which shows the date and time of provided signature, besides this the digital certification makes it more secure.

3. Imposter prevention = Digital signatures cannot be copied or forged to make any kind of fraud or misrepresentation.

4. Cost = Digital signature is way cheaper, whereas the typical paper-based signature requires postal services to deliver and cannot be as instant as digital signature.

Disadvantages

Just like any other products or services digital signature comes with its own weaknesses or disadvantages.

1. Certificates = To use the digital signature with a secure authentication process, sender and receiver both need to buy digital certifications that come with a cost.

2. Software = The other investment is to buy verification software for both the parties.

3. Compatibility = There are many standards in digital signatures which does not have the compatibility with each other, Thus makes it a bit tricky to share these digital signature documents.

4. Law = Some countries or States do not have proper cybersecurity laws which makes it highly risky to deal with in those jurisdictions.
